Claude vs ChatGPT for a small team

Checked · Re-check by

Both list at US$20/month and both reach Microsoft and Google office apps. Pick Claude Pro if your team codes; otherwise keep the one you already use.

Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus

Both plans list at US$20/month on the vendors' US pricing, and neither vendor showed a UK price when checked. Anthropic says its displayed price excludes tax. Neither plan includes API usage; that's billed separately on both sides. The real differences are in the small print. Claude Pro offers an annual option at US$17/month (US$200 billed upfront); ChatGPT Plus is monthly only. Both let you pay past the plan's included usage: Claude Pro subscribers can enable usage credits, and OpenAI sells Codex credits for use beyond the plan, including extra GPT-6 Astra access on Plus. Plus includes GPT-6 Astra only inside ChatGPT Work and Codex; GPT-6 Pro, powered by Astra, needs ChatGPT's Pro tier from US$100/month.

The small-team choice

If your team already leans on coding (scripts, small fixes, config changes), Claude Code's inclusion on Pro matters more than any chat feature. Office work does not separate them at this tier: Claude Pro includes Claude for Microsoft 365 (Outlook in beta) and Claude for Google Workspace in beta for Docs, Sheets and Slides, and ChatGPT Plus includes Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions. Your Google Workspace admin may need to allow Claude's add-on before it installs, so check that on Day 4. So the honest trade-off test is which tool your team already uses and pays for, not which chatbot sounds smarter in a demo. This recommendation comes from each vendor's own published terms, not a side-by-side benchmark or a claimed personal result.

What would change this recommendation

A change to either vendor's paid-overage terms, a UK price appearing on either vendor's site, GPT-6 Pro reaching the Plus tier, or either vendor changing its US$20 headline price would all be reasons to re-run this comparison. None of those has happened as of the checked date above; they are the specific things to watch, not a hedge.

What I'd use in a sprint

Opus 5.5 on xhigh to plan, Sonnet 5.5 on medium or high to build, Opus 5.5 on medium or GPT-6.1 on high for harder tasks.

How to test it this week

  • Day 1: pick one safe, repeatable job you already do (a weekly update, a short reply) and run the identical input through both Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus.
  • Day 2: give both the same writing or research task and check every fact and source either one hands back against the original material.
  • Day 3: hand both a small, real code or file change on something you own, and read every line of each change before accepting it.
  • Day 4: connect each one to one real office app you use daily (Claude for Microsoft 365, Claude for Google Workspace in beta, or Claude in Chrome on the Claude side, the Excel/Word/PowerPoint/Google Sheets extensions on the ChatGPT side) and see which one actually finishes the task inside it.
  • Day 5: compare the four days side by side. Switch only if one tool finished more of your real jobs with fewer corrections; if it's a tie, keep the plan you already pay for and stop testing.
